Ancient Rome: Imperial Period

The course is a continuation of the Spring 2019 course
on the Monarchy and Republic. It starts with Caesar
Octavian Augustus and the Julio-Claudian and Flavian
dynasties. It then follows the various emperors, good and
bad, through Constantine’s eastward move and on to
the eventual collapse of the whole imperial structure and
the barbarian invasions. The course will conclude with a
review of the daily life of ancient Romans and consider
again how our American forefathers consciously tried to
emulate the best parts of the ancient Republican period.
