Trojan War

Description

In this course we will examine the Greek myth/legend
regarding the Greek siege and sacking of Troy, as illuminated
by archaeological and historical research, and
told in literature over the ages from ancient Greece to
the present. We will examine in depth the iconic epic of
the Trojan War, Homer’s Iliad, as well as Shakespeare’s
different take in his play Troilus and Cressida and a
contemporary version in Madeline Miller’s prize-winning
novel, The Song of Achilles. We will do some class readings
from these pieces and watch a few video versions.
The instructor will provide select mini-lectures to stimulate
class discussion of the literary and philosophical issues
raised by this literature. Finally, we will consider why the
Trojan War and its literature are of such enduring interest.
